Chapter 46: Darkness that eats voice

And why is it that they could hear the sound of screaming when they couldn\'t hear anything else? Jael swallowed. This place is messing with their heads.

They knew then. Although they might not see, others might be seeing, which makes things worse. Then, just as it began the scream was cut short and a deadly silence followed.

"Ah." A playfully voice filled the silence. "Oh I forgot to mention. You can steal green coins from other warriors by killing them. May the Grace of Solomon be onto you!"

"Start moving now!" Temur shouted, already jerking them forward, pulling them with him. With there hands linked together, they could sense each other.

They began to walk like a crab. Jael walked with his back, using his legs to sweep the way, but the village that was filled with buildings earlier was suddenly devoid of it because as much as they walked around, they didn\'t touch any building.

They did touch an Awakener who was moving blindly, too, but she quickly got out of their way after swearing at them when she made contact with them.

They moved around like that until at last, they touched a building, it was Tim who brushed it with his shoulder but the brief contact was enough, because they saw the building dimly with that alone. They navigated their way inside through the crumbled wall.

It\'s a single-room building, but it\'s taken them out of the open for now. "Now we can think of what we can do," Temur said.

"What can we do? The spirit said we have to kill monsters and get green coins. But we can\'t see in front of us not to talk of hunting any monsters....."

Jael ignored them while he felt the place he was standing at with his legs. His right leg connected with something, and he jolted, stopping the conversation... "hmmm, guys,? I think there\'s a body lying here."

"What do you mean," Cele whispered, fear seeping into her voice.

Jael kicked the body more with his leg. "A body is lying here. Unless they are sleeping."

They aren\'t.

The team moved closer; they navigated in a way and put the body in their middle, then they crouched and briefly cut their connections to feel the body. A human male it was, blood pooled beneath the body, and the head had been torn off, leaving a bloody stump at the neck.

Fear mixed with the silence and the blindness they felt. Jael felt as if he was drowning as the sudden realization hit them– something or someone had come and killed this person.

They reached out and touched again, holding onto each other. Jael felt Tim\'s hand tremble, and Litha clutched him hard. His breath quickened. "It seems he was alone."

"But the monster or whatever got to him can still be around because the blood is still warm. It\'s not like we can see." Temur was shoving his fear away and reaching back to his training as a warrior and an hunter.

The problem was that, with his training he knew they were at the worst possible disadvantage.

"The monster might not be here." Cele was trying to reason out, but the problem lies in the fact that none of them could be sure, for all they know, they might be surrounded by monsters.

"Calm down everyone." Temur growled. \'Damn it! Just what type of trial is this? How can they hunt monsters without seeing? I want want to lead this team well but what exactly is going on? First thing first, I have to think about this carefully\'

Temur nearly slapped himself, why didn\'t he think of this? The fear wasn\'t making him think critically. "Don\'t panic. We can still use our powers. Litha covered us with a shield. You don\'t need your hand for that right?"

"I can but I can\'t do any serious attack without my hands."

"Good, focus on the shield. Cele and Tim, you are also members who can use your powers without hands. Yes, I know you might not be able to do a powerful offensive that way, but still, be prepared."

Litha made a shield around them, and immediately she covered them it was as if a cocoon that blocked the darkness was made. Suddenly they could see and hear. Litha blinked. "Wow...shit!."

The fireball that Cele made earlier bloomed and they flinched as their eyes took time to adjust.

They stopped holding hands and checked themselves. \'The five senses are things people take for granted\' Litha muttered to herself as started to breathe a little easier.

Whatever the darkness that blocked their senses was, it must be a spell that the sudden barrier cut off. "We still can\'t see anything past shield. Everything else is back outside of this place."

Temur sighed. "At least we can see for now. We can plan on how to defeat this trial."

Jael crouched and looked at the dead Awakener. "Looks like one of the freelancers. I can\'t see anything on him that\'ll point to where he belongs. What should we do to it?"

"Nothing we can do," Litha replied. "Unless we want to loot it?"

Temur shook his head quickly. "No need. Just leave it there. We are here for bigger things. We have a lot on our plate already, and it might even be a bastard Awakener that killed him and might still be around."

"Can we move around with this shield surrounding us?" Jael touched the edge of Litha\'s shield feeling the hardness.

"No. Unless I can continuously make the shield....!!"

Something struck their shield from the outside and the blue translucent barrier sparked with energy. Jael looked in the direction sharply, but he saw nothing except for empty darkness that rolled like fog.

"Get ready for battle!" Temur shouted.
