Chapter 505: 504 You know it well
As Wen Ran stepped out of the restroom, she saw Bai Xiaoxiao waiting for her, looking at her with concern.
She managed to force a smile on her face, without forming any laughter: “I’m okay, where are my dad and brother?”
“Director Gu received a phone call and seemed to have urgent matters to attend to. He’s left already. Gu Kai and Mo Xiuchen are downstairs, and asked me to come to the restroom to find you.”
Bai Xiaoxiao explained briefly as she stood not far behind her, with Qing Yang and Qing Feng also present.
“Let’s go home.”
Wen Ran composed herself and moved forward to push her own wheelchair. Bai Xiaoxiao wanted to ask something, but she held her curiosity.
**
In the afternoon, Wen Ran seemed a bit out of sorts.
Seeing that Wen Ran wasn’t in high spirits, Bai Xiaoxiao started speaking less. They sat on the balcony basking in the sun, one was flipping through a magazine, the other was idly rocking in the hammock.
By ten o’clock at night, Wen Ran hadn’t received a call from Gu Kai.
She did not call to ask, instead, she listened to a lullaby to put herself to sleep. Since that conversation with Mo Xiuchen at noon, he had not sent her any messages in the afternoon, and he didn’t come over for dinner at the Wen’s family house in the evening.
It seemed that he accepted her decision and gave her three days of space.
At one in the morning, a dark Aston slowly drove over and parked outside Wen’s villa.
The car window tilted down, revealing Mo Xiuchen’s handsome face. He looked up at the second-floor window that was faintly lit.
Just by quietly staring at her window, his eyes couldn’t help but reveal a warmth, easing the pain in his heart bit by bit.
She didn’t want him disturbing her, he understood that, as long as she didn’t see him, it would be alright.
Gu Kai mentioned that Wen Ran had a checkup today. He knew that beneath her exterior that already seemed to be dealing with her disease and physical conditions, she was terrified and panicked.
He wished more than anything that he could be with her, that she could share her fears with him, that she could be selfish instead of pushing him away when she needed him the most.
As these thoughts crossed his mind, his eyes suddenly misted over.
He wound down the window, lit a cigarette, and took a deep puff, resting his hand on the window frame, he closed his eyes to calm himself.
Suddenly? his mobile phone began to vibrate, followed by an incoming call.
He pressed the answer key, but didn’t say anything.
“Mo Xiuchen, why are you here again? Can you stop tormenting Ranran? And stop tormenting yourself?”
Wen Jin’s low voice came through from the phone.
“I’ve just arrived, how did you know? Are you not asleep yet?”
With narrowed eyes, Mo Xiuchen exhaled a ring of smoke, choosing to counter-question rather than answer.
“I just woke up and saw your car downstairs. Go back, Xiaoxiao said that Ranran was absent-minded all afternoon, she only took a few bites of her dinner. If you continue pressuring her like this, she’ll not be able to take it.”
“I won’t let her know.”
Mo Xiuchen’s voice was a bit hoarse.
Hearing that Ranran had only eaten a few bites in the evening, a wave of pain surged in his heart.
“You know very well that as soon as you’re here, she’ll know.” Wen Jin was not in agreement, mainly because he was afraid that Wen Ran would be heartbroken once she found out.
Wen Ran hasn’t been sleeping well these past few days. She often wakes up at night and she would be saddened once she noticed his car parked downstairs and him sitting in the car overnight.
In the end, Wen Jin failed to persuade Mo Xiuchen to leave, and he hung up, leaving him to his own devices.
As Wen Jin had said, Wen Ran did indeed know.
Perhaps, people who are in love really do have a telepathic connection.
The moment Mo Xiuchen’s Aston stopped, Wen Ran woke up.
She opened her eyes, looking toward the floor-to-ceiling window. She seemed to sense his presence. After lying in bed for a few more minutes, she got up quietly and went to the restroom. She opened the door and left her room.
Her room was dimly lit while she was sleeping.
She entered the room next door. Last night, Mo Xiuchen was still sleeping there. She stood at the door for a couple of minutes, adjusting to the darkness, and moved slowly towards the window.
Lifting the corner of the curtain, she could see Mo Xiuchen sitting in the driver’s seat from here. The light from his cigarette in his fingers was dim yet distinctive.
After one glance, she dropped the curtains.
She leaned against the wall next to her thin figure, looking up at the ceiling without a word. After spacing out for a while, she walked to the bed and climbed into the one he slept in.
After a day, the scent on the quilt was long gone.
Thinking back to those nights where he held her in his arms and she fell asleep on his arm, her eyes involuntarily welled up again.
**
In the morning, Bai Xiaoxiao opened her eyes only to find that Wen Ran wasn’t by her side. Blinking in surprise, she called out ‘Ranran’ towards the restroom. There was no reply.
She put on her clothes and freshened up, after which she pushed her wheelchair out of the room, just in time to see Wen Jin coming out of his. After greeting each other, Wen Jin asked her:
“Xiaoxiao, is Ranran still sleeping?”
“Ah?”
Bai Xiaoxiao widened her eyes in surprise: “Didn’t Ranran wake up a long time ago? When I woke up, she wasn’t anywhere to be seen. I thought she had already gotten up.”
The look in Wen Jin’s eyes slightly changed, and he glanced downstairs, but he didn’t see Wen Ran. He smiled faintly, saying, “Let’s go downstairs first. Ranran didn’t eat much last night, maybe she just wake up early because she was hungry.”
The first thing Wen Jin did when they got downstairs was to look for Wen Ran in the kitchen. Auntie Li was the only one in the kitchen, but she hadn’t seen Wen Ran either.
A thought crossed Wen Jin’s mind, and he suddenly had a hunch. He told Bai Xiaoxiao before swiftly returning upstairs and heading straight to the room where Mo Xiuchen had stayed the previous two nights.
As he pushed open the door and looked inside, as he suspected, Wen Ran was sleeping on the bed on her side with her face turned towards him. In her deep sleep, her brows were lightly furrowed.
A wave of bitterness surged in Wen Jin’s heart. He stood at the door for a while before he stepping inside.
Standing at the bedside, looking at Wen Ran sleeping peacefully, all Wen Jin could feel was heartache. From her slightly swollen eyes, it’s evident that she had been crying last night.
The tears had dried on the pillow, but the traces were still clearly visible.
Mo Xiuchen had told him on the phone last night that he wouldn’t let her know that he had been here, but here she was, asleep on his bed, and she had been crying. Anyone could guess that she must have known that Mo Xiuchen was here.
Wen Jin was suddenly filled with anger and wanted to call Mo Xiuchen to give him a piece of his mind. But before he could make the call, Wen Ran started talking in her sleep. Even though her voice was soft, in the quiet room and peaceful morning, Wen Jin could hear clearly what she called out, ‘Xiuchen!’
After calling out, a look of pain flashed across her face. Just as Wen Jin was about to wake her, she calmed down again.
